Currently, I’m working on three projects with Unforgettable…very inexpensive gifts when you have a lot to make.
Just an FYI: This hat takes a very small amount of yarn to make. I had so much left out of the one skein, I made a pair of fingerless mitts too…with yarn left over. At this time AC Moore has this yarn on sale for $4 a skein. They also have a 50% off coupon, so that makes it about $2-3 for a hat and mitts set. This makes great gifts for hardly any money!
This hat took less than one skein. You can easily make it more slouchy by adding rounds. It actually ended up a little too slouchy for my taste, but it’s okay. If you want it more fitted just crochet about 14 rounds instead of 16…or however many you need. It’s easy to adjust.
Materials
Worsted Weight Yarn (I used Red Heart Boutique Unforgettable in Parrot)
I love Lion Brand Amazing as well (especially Mauna Loa colorway)
Size H (5mm) crochet hook
Yarn Needle
Gauge
15sts or 8 rows = 4 inches (10cm)
Pattern
Note: Join each round. Begin each round with ch 3 which will count as a dc.
Ch 4
Round 1: 11 dc in first chain made which will be the 4th ch from hook. The skipped three chains will count as the first dc. Join with sl st in top of first st of rnd. (12 dc)
Rnd 2: 2 dc in each st. Join (24 dc)
Rnd 3: 2 dc in first st, dc in next st. (2 dc in next st, dc in next st) around. Join (36 dc).
Rnd 4: 2 dc in first st, dc in next 2 sts. (2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts) around. Join (48 dc).
Rnd 5: 2 dc in first st, dc in next 3 sts. (2 dc in next st, dc in next 3 sts) around. Join (60 dc).
Rnd 6: 2 dc in first st, dc in next 4 sts. (2 dc in next st, dc in next 4 sts) around. Join (72 dc).
Rnds 7-16: Dc in each st around. Join. Do not finish off.
Ribbing
I love this ribbing method. I don’t remember where I learned it. (pattern or someone showing me)
Work ribbing in rows. If you crochet loosely, go down a hook size to G. I crocheted the ribbing rather tightly, so the H hook worked fine for me.
Ch 12
Row 1: sc into one loop of each chain. You will be working back toward the body of the hat. (11 sc). Attach to hat with sl st into the next st on the hat. Sl st into the next st. Ch 1. Turn
Row 2: Skip over the ch and those slip stitches.
Sc in the back loop only in each st across. Ch 1, turn. (11 sc) In the photo below, you can see where I skipped those sl sts and put the first sc in the back loop of the stitch that I’m holding.
Row 3: Sc in back loop only in each st across. Sl st into next 2 sts in the last rnd of the hat. Ch 1, turn.
In this photo you can see that I am attaching to the last round of the hat. Make sure you do not work into the same stitch that you already have a sl st in.
Rows 4- 71: Repeat rows 2 and 3. It can be a little tricky at first to skip over those sl st made. Just count your stitches and make sure you only have 11 sc in each row. Remember those slip stitches are only to attach to the hat and not to work in to.
Keep going until you get all the way around.
Sl st into the last st on the hat and into the join. Now turn and sl st the seam together. I turned the hat inside out and slip stitched into the back loops of each of the joining rows.
Weave ends. All done!

As I mentioned before, I made a matching set of mitts with the leftover yarn. I’ll get to work on that pattern and try to post next weekend.

You're welcome. I hardly ever buy Red Heart, only if I need a certain color for something like the ripple or patchwork, but this yarn feels so much nicer. It's nice to see Red Heart coming up with something different and a little better. I haven't bought the Treasures yet, but I will now.

Liz — I love when you show new methods of doing things. I remember one time you posted a pattern and mentioned that when you do rounds, you do not join until the second row (I think it was on an infinity scarf) — I now do that ALL the time, and I totally agree b/c my chains do not get twisted that way plus I can sew it more securely at the end. Hope you had a great Christmas, I did your hat exactly as you said, however I used a different yarn. I did the gauge and it was great but the hat came out tad smaller. I fits me but tightly and doesn't slouch on me as yours does on your picture…. Do you know where I could have gone wrong ??? can you measure your hat to give an approximate size

My head is small. I can almost wear my 6 year olds hats. so I'm sure that is the problem. I have made gifts for other female family members and measured with my head not thinking and they were too small for them. I'll include a note about this in the pattern. Thank you for the feedback.

Hi, thank you so much for your pattern, it's a beautiful hat! I would've never looked twice at this yarn if it wasn't for your suggestion, so thanks for that as well! I have a question about working the ribbing into the body of the hat. I understand what you mean by attaching the first sl st into the first stitch of the hat, but where exactly does the second sl st go – into the next stitch of that same row (so essentially each ribbed row will take up 2 stitches of the hat's body?) or into the next stitch of the row directly above the first sl st? I hope I'm making sense.

I love this hat! I made one for myself and I think if I had it to do over again I would have made less rows of double crochet as I have a small head and not a lot of hair. Otherwise I love it! Do you have the pattern for the matching gloves up yet?!

Oh gosh, I'm sorry I missed your comment. Yes the next sl st goes into the next stitch. Just make sure you don't work into the same st twice. I noticed some hats from other people look as if they have more than 71 or 72 rows of ribbing.

Thanks so much for this free pattern- Love it! Combines something old and something new for me. I've made a few dc hats before, but never tried the ribbing like your design. Looks like crochet and knit combined. Just made one last night as I had the same yarn and colorway you used and I love how it turned out! This one is going to charity for cancer patients at MD Anderson, but I will definitely being making more for gifts this year!

I had the same problem. I don't often check my gauge but I did this time. The hat is definitely snug.

I just tried to make this hate ant the bottom of the hat turned out way too big. I could fit 2 heads in it. What happened? I didn't finish the ribbing because the hat is so big I assumed it is ruined

I'm gonna start this pattern soon…I have a lil bit bigger head than most so I'm gonna try to just add an extra round or two of increase, seeing how some say its a lil snug 🙂 best part of crochet is you can always frog it, especially with hats since they work up so fast 🙂 love the look and slouch so it can cover my ears in the cold northern winters that are coming
I don't understand the last part of this pattern. I've crocheted the entire hat but the ending is hard to do. Any advice on how to do it? What u wrote makes no sense to me. Help!

Just finished this hat. Needed the instructions on attaching the ribbing properly. Thanks so much. I have been making hats for years that are entirely ribbing except for a short decrease at top of singles. So very familiar with ribbing but never could get it right when switching to it.
I made this hat and no way does it fit like yours. This one is double and do not crochet loosely. What gives. What went wrong? Mine looks the size of two hats I used the needles you said but didn’t turn out like yours. If you could help would be great.
I cannot understand what you mean about going over the slip stitches. What slip stitches? As far as i know there's only the 1, whe I joined the 1 little row of rib to the hat. Now I don't know whe to go from there. Wouldn't it be just as easy to make 72 rows of ribbing and then just sew it to the hat?
Look in the photo where I am holding one of the stitches. I am skipping over the two slip stitches next to my hook and working straight into the one I’m holding. You will slip into the one to attach and then slip stitch into the next one. Then skip those…and I’m sure I just confused you more. The pictures are important, you’ll need to go by those.
Where did you get better instructions for the ribbing?

Just made this hat. I used the hooks in the directions, but the hat came out a little larger than I expected. Will try smaller hook next time I make this hat. Beautiful hat with the Unforgettable yarn.
I ended up adding 3 more increase rows, as I knew this one would be too small – I have a ginormous head – and though I’m still working on it, I’m hoping it helps enough. If not, this takes such a little amount of yarn, I’ll try again!

I’m stumped. I’ve made this three times and it has worked perfectly until I am almost finished with the ribbing , which is when it fans out. I even went down a couple sizes in hook size. I’ll post the pics of it on my Facebook page. I’m under Kathleen Elders Valentin. I would have done it here but I haven’t found a place to do it. 😛
You may be adding to many ribbing rows. Check and make sure you are not working a ribbing row for each stitch from the last round of the hat…meaning make sure you are slip stitching to attach to the hat and then another stitch over. Then turn and skip those two slip stitches and work back into the ribbing row. Most people are adding rows and not realizing…. but if you’re counting 72 rows then I’m not sure what is happening.

Yarn was tangled in middle. List half of the skein so no gloves whoch u didnt post.
I have never crocheted ( is that even a word?) before. So i am totally new! And the patterns seem gibberish to me. I am hoping to make this hat for myself before we get snow, ( a month and a half at most) other than googling translation words for the pattern and youtubeing videos on how to do certain stitches, do you have any advice or anything that could help me?
A month and a half before snow?! Where are you located? Honestly, I didnt start crocheting hats. I started with a scarf to get familiar with holding the yarn and hook. You may want to start with an easier project first. Best of luck and let me know if you need help.

I’m making this beautiful hat, but am confused about the start… I did the change and first round as the pattern outlines. There is a hole at the top of the hat — is it supposed to be that way? Also, since the pattern says to connect the first round using a slip stitch at the top of the first stitch, the bottom of the first row isn’t connected, which makes that hole in the top disconnected at the bottom of the last stitch in the chain. It’s confusing. Can you clarify? Thank you 🙂
