I made this shrug in three different colors last year. I’m just now getting around to writing out the instructions.
It is a really simple and quick project. It is worked from side to side making it very easy to adjust to the size that you need.
Materials
Size 3 cotton fashion thread
Size J crochet hook
Yarn needle
Size
S/M
Gauge
5 V-sts = 4″ (10cm)
4 rows = 4″ (10cm)
These measurements are unblocked. The texture is extremely stretchy, so gauge is difficult to determine.
Stitches Used
Chain = ch
Double crochet = dc
V-st = dc, ch 1, dc
Pattern
Do not crochet too tightly. You want a loose stitch
Ch 61
Row 1: V-st (dc, ch 1, dc) in the 5th ch from hook. (the first 3 chs skipped will be your first dc of the row). Skip 2 chains, V-st in next ch, (skip next 2 chs, V-st in next ch) across until to reach last 2 chs. Dc in the last ch.
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as a dc). V-st into the next ch (which will be the ch from the last V-st of the previous row) repeat across until last dc. Dc in the last dc. Turn.
You should have 19 V-sts with a dc on each end. If you have more or less, don’t freak out. It’s not a big deal unless it is abnormally large or small.
Row 3- 32: Repeat row 2.
You can adjust the number of rows to your size
To sew under the arms, fold, creating a narrow piece
Sew each side about 2.5″ to 3″
If this is confusing, just play around with it and I think you’ll see what I’m referring to…it’s so easy.
Weave ends.
I did not block mine.
If you have any questions, just leave me a comment. I’ll try to help.
Have a great weekend!

Tnak you for sharing this pattern!
approximately how many balls of thread does it take for one shrug??
I think it took a little more than one. Maybe more…so sorry it's been over a year, since I made these, maybe two years. Just buy 2 and I'm pretty sure that will be enough.
Thanks,
Liz
I know what you mean about wishing for warmer weather. I am so excited about summer being here (almost). When you are posting about your summers, we are suffering through winter here. Thanks so much,
Liz
Thanks so much for the quick response. Want to make this for my granddaughter!

Hi Liz! Your shrug is beautiful! I want the same of course, so I just started to make it and have one question – did you work your V-stitches in the one loop of sc? Thank you! Thank you for sharing as well!
Olga
Hello Olga,
Thanks so much and you're welcome. I did work the v-st in one loop of the ch.
Liz
Thank you! ☼

This was so easy … wasn't sure how the arms were done, but I figured it out quickly. My daughter wanted one for a dress we got her last night and it was done in no time. I have actually made 2 due to my daughter being smaller than a small. Thank you so much.
I love this little shrug, thank you so much for the pattern 🙂
Adorable, I cant wait to make this! I am new to designing patterns my blog is FlowersCreations.blogspot.com if you have any advice for a newbie 🙂
This is lovely, I have to have a go at this!
I'm going to a wedding in July and the reception is on a boat. I've been looking for a shrug and it appears I've found it. However, I find that most of the yarn stores that carry fashion cotton have little in the way of colors. What other yarn do you think might give me the same effect? Thanks!!
I LOVE this! You did a beautiful job! I would love if you linked up to my new fiber arts link party!

Hi – what a lovely piece this is! Even though I'm older than dirt, I'm pretty new to crochet and have been looking for something that will utilize the size 3 thread I just bought in order to make a nice lacey shrug. This seems exactly what I'm looking for – thank you, thank you! – except because I'm new to the craft, I wondered if I might be able to make this longer, since I am not cute and thin like your model (unless that's you, and then I'm not cute and thin like you). LOL Anyhow, when you say to adjust the number of rows to your size, do you mean lengthwise or widthwise? Just curious, since I want to try and make this – it's adorable! Thanks, and I will spend some more time looking at your blog – I think I will find tons of info!
Melissa
Hello,
I have shopped at all kinds of stores for yarn. Walmart, AC Moore, Michaels, and my local yarn shop. All that I have been to seem to have a decent selection. You really should use a cool fiber for the hot weather. I have found very lightweight acrylics that would work. Remember to use fingering weight or lace weight yarn to get the same effect. I hope this helps,
Liz
Love this pattern – thanks so much for sharing it! I included a link to this page in a roundup of shrug patterns on my blog this morning. 🙂 http://bit.ly/LwQgpd
I am so happy I found this pattern, and your site! I am about 5 weeks from giving birth. This summer heat wave is killing me and I am so uncomfortable – I have resolved to just wear super comfy sun dresses from here on out. But they can seem so plain, and then I end up wearing the same one twice in a week and I just needed something to spruce up my look. Having a few of these shrugs to accent the simple dresses is perfect! No added heat, gives me a chance to go through some of my stash yarn, and I get the reward of having a completed project in such a short time frame! (Currently working on a glittery gold one that I can finish during an afternoon conference call.)

Melissa, I am sure you started on this pattern long ago, but just noticed there was not yet a reply to your question. You can adjust in both dimensions. The ch 61 (=19/20 V-Stitches) will make up the circumference of the arm, and the 32 or so rows of V-Stitches make up the width of the shrug across your shoulders. I hope yours turned out lovely, or if you held off, I hope this helps. Welcome to the craft!

Hi! I was wondering, how many yards of lace weight yarn would you say this took? I have 450 yards and am totally not sure what something like this would take to make.

Hello Liz, if I need to make size L/XL do I still chain 61 and then just add more rows? Thank you
Hi, I stumbled across your blog today and saw your shrug. I'd need a larger size….. is there a stitch per inch guide I could use? Depending on the pattern I'm an XL or 2X….. I just started spinning this past winter and have been looking for projects to create with my hand-spun yarn. I also need to figure out yardage since that's how I measure handspun. You do beautiful work, can't wait to try this shrug!!!!
