Chunky Beanie Pattern

Well, I made a trip to the Post office this morning to mail out the hats from the giveaway. Sure enough, the USPS is closed today due to the holiday. I do this every single time they are closed. It seems like I always have orders to mail out on holidays. Anyway this worked out well, because I had the chance to take more photos.

Materials

One skein Chunky or Bulky 5 weight yarn (I used Patons Shetland Chunky in Oxford Grey)
For the magenta round I used a small amount left over from my Isar scarf
Size I (5.5mm) crochet hook
Yarn needle

One size fits most

Pattern

Ch 3

Rnd 1: 7 hdc in 3rd ch from hook (which is the 1st ch made) Join with sl st to the top of first st. (8 hdc)

Rnd 2: Ch 2 (counts as first st here and throughout). Hdc in same st. 2 hdc in each st around. Join with sl st. (16 hdc)

Rnd 3: Ch 2. Hdc in same st, hdc in next st. (2 hdc in next st, hdc in next st) around. Join with sl st. (24 hdc).

Rnd 4: Ch 2, hdc in same st, hdc in next 2 sts. (2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts) around. Join with sl st. (32 hdc).

Rnd 5: Ch 2, hdc in same st, hdc in next 3 sts. (2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 3 sts) around. Join. (40 hdc).

Rnd 6: Ch 2, hdc in same st, hdc in next 4 sts. (2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 4 sts) around.
Join. (48 hdc).

Rnd 7: Ch 2, hdc in same st, hdc in next 5 sts. (2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 5 sts) around. Join. (56 sts).

Rnd 8 – 15. Ch 2, hdc in each st around. Join.

Rnd 16: Ch 2, hdc in the back loop only in each st around. Join and finish off.

For the magenta rnd you will work around the post of each hdc of rnd 16.

Attach with sl st and work a sl st around each post. You will insert the hook from the front and go under like you are working a front post stitch. When you make it around to the last stitch, cut the yarn.

The following photos will show you how to finish off. I like to use this special finishing all the time. It eliminates the need for a knot. I hate using knots in crochet. Most of the time they are not necessary.

When you get to the last sl st pull the tail up through the top of the stitch.

Now take your hook and slide it under the first sl st and pull the tail all the way through

Take the hook and place it up through the center of the last sl st

Take the tail and pull down into the center of the last sl st. You end up with a seamless finish. Cool, huh?

Years ago a lady taught me lots of shortcuts and tips when crocheting. I use this tip all the time.

  11. Great pattern and I like the magenta on the brim. I just made a hat with that stitch [border] and liked how it turned out. I'm glad I happened onto your page because I like the way you finished off better – mine has a bit of a lump where the two ends meet.

    It's not a silly question, and you're welcome. The Ch 2 counts as the first stitch, so you do not put a hdc in the same stitch. Just Ch 2 and go on to the next st.

  17. Hi Liz, I just made this beanie, and love the pattern and how easy and fast it was. Only one little problem… it turned out huge! It isn't fitted to mine or my husband's head at all. I used the hook you indicated, but I'm wondering if my stitches just weren't tight enough, or if I need to cut out a row near the top of the beanie. Maybe even use a smaller hook? Ideas? Thanks for the great pattern!

  19. I ended up just using an H (5.00MM) hook for a slightly tighter weave and increased the rounds up to 72 stitches and repeated the 72 stitches in rounds until I reached the desired length. If I would have stuck to the pattern it would maybe fit a toddler.

I used a J (6.00mm) hook with Loops and Threads Charisma, Bulky (5), yarn and ended up with a beautiful hat, but the finished size is 17" circumference by 6.5" length, only big enough for about 9mos to 2T. My colors are dark blue for the body with a beautiful red for the finish perfect for U of A. A great hat for nieces, but in no way fits an adult women's head. I will try this pattern again with my N hook that I normally use with my size 5 yarn, and see if I need to add one more row of *2HDC, HDC in next 6* to enlarge the crown more.

    The finished hat does look great, just very small.

  21. Gauge and tension is so important. I used bulky or chunky yarn and do not crochet tightly. A lot of people crochet tightly, or tighter than I do…and of course some are looser. So it just depends on your tension. I hope your next one fits and you can always just use a hat size guide instead of guessing about sizing or wondering if it will fit.

  23. I have to be doing something wrong. This is only the 2nd hat I've ever made crocheting, but I've failed at both. The first one (following a completely different pattern) was large enough to fit 2 heads inside almost. And this one came out way shorter than the picture. I was careful to make sure I counted and did the correct number of rows and it doesn't even come down to my ears. I think I'm going to have to give up on trying to make hats and just stick with scarves and what not. 🙁

  24. I am new to crochet and I found your blog when I was looking for help with sizing. I do alright when watching other people on youtube because I can just copy what they are doing. Right now I am about half way done my first hat and I was hoping to add the color along the bottom as you have here. I haven't done anything like that before though – I'm still not sure when reading patterns. I hope to try a few of your projects in the future actually, thanks for positing!

  28. i know this is an old post but i just wanted to add the size i ended up with for any future beanie makers. I used this pattern to make a cat ear beanie. i made it with lion brand homespun (bulky/5) and i also did not join rounds but did one continuous spiral. it is about 7" long and 22" around. fits me perfect, and has enough give to fit various sizes.

Thank you for the pattern, but this hat is so small (I would say I have normal head, not child head, but normal), I had to add more then 10 rows (including triple crochet row, few dc rows etc.). I have same amount of cm per row as you, so it is not about tension. This is toddler hat. I managed to finish it, and save it but the result is not what I was hoping for.
